An Exploration in Sustainable Modern Quilting is a juried gallery show of “modern quilts”, as defined by The Modern Quilt Guild. The vision for An Exploration in Sustainable Modern Quilting is to challenge quilters and our community to view and interpret what a modern quilt is and apply sustainable, environmentally friendly, materials and practices to create a functional quilt.

The gallery show will allow quilters in the Colorado Front Range communities to have their work recognized for innovation and sustainable construction.

JURORS: Boulder Modern Quilt Guild jury panel, Anne Deister, Shelly Sommer, Laura Loewen, and guest Colorado Front Range community juror, Stephanie Ruyle of Spontaneous Threads. The jury will select quilts based on originality, design, technique, craftsmanship, and visual impact of sustainability.

FEE: There will be a $10.00 entrance fee for each quilt accepted into the show. Up to (2) quilts per quilter could be accepted.

ELIGIBILITY: Any quilter who lives along the Colorado Front Range may submit quilts to be juried. Each person may submit up to (3) quilts to be juried. The maximum width of finished quilts may not exceed 60”; otherwise quilts may be folded for display. There is no minimum size. Quilts larger than 30” wide must include a sleeve (tutorial available here). Quilts 30” or smaller must include corner triangle tabs (tutorial available here). Quilts must contain a majority of materials qualifying as sustainable. Quilts must be labeled with name, phone number, and address of entrant. 3-dimensional works cannot be accommodated in this show.

CATEGORIES: Please submit quilts that fall within at least one of the following categories:

  1. Repurposed, rescued fabrics
  2. Renewable, sustainable new fabrics
  3. Scraps, waste, and otherwise trashed pieces of fabric
  4. Repaired, restored, and reworked ‘old’ quilts into new quilts
  5. Unusual materials – We encourage this to be a true exploration and sized as a 30” wall hanging or smaller.

SUBMISSIONS: Entrants may submit entries online by filling out the form below. Submissions must include name of entrant, email, town of residence, which guild(s) the entrant is a member of, at least (2) digital photographs of quilt, including overall photograph and detail photograph, finished dimensions, artist statement, including name(s) of any other contributors, materials used, and a description of what makes the quilt sustainable. One quilt per submission form please. Entrants may submit up to (3) quilts to be juried. We expect approximately 10-20 quilts will be accepted depending on sizes.

Please note: The quilts may hang in a space that will be accessible to the public.
