Sustainable Quilting with Eliu and Shelly

It’s been three years since the Boulder MQG’s quilt show An Exploration in Sustainable Quilting. You can see all of the quilts from that here and here.

Eliu and Shelly continue to be a huge inspiration with their commitment to sustainability in quilting and we were lucky enough to talk to them both about their quilting journeys during the February evening meeting.

Shelly and Eliu have both recently appeared on episodes of the podcast Check Your Thread.

A recording of the presentation is available for all members. Check the Member Area for a link.

Shelly does a lot of work with reclaimed and thrifted fabrics. You can find her on Instagram as @encodedstudio to see more of her amazing work.

Shelly has a piece hanging at the Boulder Public Library Maker Made show that is made from woven VHS tape.

Eliu has definitely changed how many of us look at a pair of jeans. He doesn’t just use the fabric but he even goes as far as reclaiming the thread.

Eliu is on Instagram as @madeorremade and you should definitely check out all his incredible work.

Hopefully Eliu and Shelly inspired you to think more about the impact of your quilting!

March 2020 – Meeting Recap and Announcements

ANNOUNCEMENTS

In an effort to keep everyone healthy, we will be canceling the March 21 open sew. Keep an eye on the BoulderMQG Instagram for some at home sewing encouragement. And use #bouldermqgathome to participate in our virtual open sew.

As of right now we have not made a decision about the April 2 evening meeting. We will keep an eye on things and let everyone know closer to the date if there will be a meeting.

The Mystery BOM has started! Read the introduction post here. Why not use some of your extra time at home to make your first block? Laura L. designed the first block and you’ll be learning how to make half-rectangle triangles.

MEETING RECAP

At the March evening meeting Melodie Munson from The Presser Foot in Longmont presented on sewing machine maintenance. She taught us a lot about cleaning, needles, and thread.

Thanks to everyone who came out to the March evening meeting. Make sure to keep an eye on your email for information about the April evening meeting.

February 2020 – Meeting Recap and Announcements

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Right now there are two different shows that have quilts from Boulder MQG members. The Boys are Back in Town runs through April 25 at the Rocky Mountain Quilt Museum and features a quilt by member Eliu.

MakerMade2020 is at the Boulder Public Library through March 30. This isn’t a quilt show, but has quite a few quilts and fiber pieces, including ones from members Laura L. and Rebecca.

In 2020 there will be a Mystery BOM which will run from March-October. Each month’s block will be presented by a different member and feature a different skill. Keep an eye on the blog for the first post.

The next open sew will be February 22, 2020 at Sister Carmen Community Center. If you plan to attend, please RSVP.

MEETING RECAP

We had great participation with the Valentine’s Day lottery blocks. Rebecca and Patty both won half, but Patty took them all home to prevent another UFO for Rebecca.

Amazingly, Patty has already finished a quilt top with the blocks! Great job!

The first UFO checkin was at the February evening meeting, and the next project is Number 6. It’s not too late to sign up if you haven’t yet, read the full post here.

Penny Layman presented at our February meeting and showed her paper piecing design method. It was a great presentation and wonderful to see her process and quilt blocks.
