January 2018 – Meeting Recap and Announcements

Thanks so much to everyone who came out for the first evening meeting of 2018. We’ve changed our meetings to the first Thursday of the month and we were thrilled that so many of you were able to join us, and that we had some new faces!

Our new President this year is Claudia Sheehan. She presided over our annual membership meeting and discussed a lot of the new things happening in the guild in 2018. Our new Vice President, Laura Loewen, showed off the sample Block of the Month quilt and explained the exciting challenge. We hope to get a lot of participation this year, so if you make a block, please show it off on Instagram using #bouldermqgbom18 and tag us @bouldermqg.  On Facebook share your blocks on the Boulder Modern Quilt Guild page. We want to see what you do with this challenge and show off your blocks on the blog, Facebook, and Instagram! This isn’t just limited to guild members, so please invite your friends to participate, no matter where they live.

Claudia also announced the committees and we are going to be needing volunteers. If you would like to get involved or find out what committee opportunities are available, please make sure to fill out the survey that was in your latest BoulderMQG email or email Claudia directly. A few of the volunteer opportunities include retreat planning, quilt show committee, social media outreach, and education committee, among others.

Our evening presentation was on Sustainable Quilting. Laura and Claudia presented information about issues with the cotton industry, more sustainable alternatives to quilting cotton, sources for repurposed materials, and methods for cleaning found fabrics.

This presentation lead up to an announcement regarding the upcoming quilt show that the Boulder MQG along with the Sustainability, Energy and Environment Community at University of Colorado Boulder are hosting, sponsored by Albert A. Bartlett Science Communication Center, An Exploration in Sustainable Modern Quilting. Registration will be open January 15 for anyone in the Colorado Front Range. There will be more information and resources posted in the upcoming weeks, but if you have any specific questions, please email us.

Thanks to everyone who brought their sustainable quilts for Show and Tell!

Cynthia showed off a colorful quilt she made with scraps as small as 1/2″. Kim showed a traditional quilt that demonstrated mixing new fabrics with her great grandmother’s projects. Katie A. showed off a quilt she made using pieces of her husband’s work shirts combined with quilting cottons. She also brought a commissioned quilt made with repurposed vintage Star Wars sheets.

Full presentation documents from meeting available to BMQG members in the member area.

Thanks again to everyone who came out for the meeting and we hope to see you all at the open sew on January 20 and the next evening meeting February 1.
