March 2019 – Meeting Recap and Announcements

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Join us for our next open sew on Saturday, March 23 at Alfalfa’s in Louisville. To guarantee a spot for your machine, please make sure to RSVP. For our afternoon challenge project Laura L will present a learn something new topic on needle turn applique.

MEETING RECAP

The March meeting opened with show and tell. We love seeing what everyone is working on whether you are new to quilting or are an expert. Here are some of the great projects that we saw at our meeting.

Please remember that general show and tell will be shown at evening meetings every other month (May, July, Sept)  when we are not having our UFO Challenge show and tell (April, June, Aug, Oct, Dec). You can also bring general show and tell to any of our open sew days. We typically have our show and tell just before lunch around 11:30am. If you can’t join us for the entire sew day, join us to see what our members have been working on and to eat lunch with us!

Laura L presented on different fabric selection methods and how you can apply those to your fabric pulls. Members and guests learned how to take inspiration from many things like photographs, fashion, and even other quilts, as well as others. Members can get the full presentation in the member area. We also introduced two challenges, Kona color of the year mini quilt, and Instagram fabric pull challenge.

Members will have the opportunity to sign up for the Kona Splash color of the year challenge at the March and April guild events. Read more about the rules and sign up here. The Kona challenge will provide members with a piece of Kona Splash to use in a quilt that takes advantage of a fabric selection method from our March presentation. Members are also encouraged to use a design that showcases a feature from the April presentation “What Makes a Quilt Modern.” Everyone participating will receive their fabric beginning in May and will share their mini quilts at the October evening meeting.

Our second challenge does not require participants to actually sew anything. It is designed to help you practice your fabric selection skills. Our Instagram fabric pull challenge will present a monthly prompt for a theme and then participants will share their fabric pulls with the hashtag #bouldermqgfabricpull. Follow us on Instagram for the latest updates and challenge prompts @bouldermqg.

Claudia will be presenting “What makes a quilt modern” at our April 4 evening meeting.

If you have any specific questions, please get in touch and let us know!

February 2019 – Meeting Recap and Announcements

ANNOUNCEMENTS

The next open sew is Sunday, February 24. If you plan on attending, please make sure to RSVP. Tracy’s Basic Skill Building demo will be on French Seams. If you would like to learn how to make a pillowcase with this method, bring three 1 yard pieces of fabric.

MEETING RECAP

The meeting was the annual member meeting and started off with going over the budget and updates from all the committee heads. We have a lot of great programming planned for 2019, and you can still sign up to help.

The full meeting minutes are available in the Member Area.

Members can submit a blog post here or sign up from an open sew demo here.

There are 23 UFO challenge participants, and 17 finished their first projects. Not everyone had their projects at the meeting to show (remember, you can email them or post them on Instagram using #bouldermqgufos if you can’t be at the meeting)

The next number was drawn and it’s 5. This needs to be completed by the April 4 evening meeting, so get working!

All of the finished UFOs ended up taking far longer than expected, so Laura L. and Rebecca presented the world’s fastest overview of different color harmonies. There will be slower, more in depth explorations for each month of the 2019 Color Study Quilt.

At the March 7 evening meeting we will be discussing fabric selection. If you have any specific questions, please get in touch and let us know!

MEETING RECAP

We had a huge turnout for our first meeting of 2019. 23 members and 6 guests joined us for a night of learning about Color Theory.

First, Claudia handed over the position of guild president to Monique. There were announcements and group introductions before we has show and tell.

Wendy showed her new HST quilt top finish, Laura finished her second Boulder MQG BOM quilt top, and Katie L. showed off her shoe bag pattern and an awesome oversized hexie quilt.

After show and tell, Rebecca and Laura lead us in the first of two presentations on Color Theory. We learned about value, tone, and basic colors. There may have been some head scratching, color theory can be complex, but the 2019 Color Study Block of the Month quilt was introduced. All year we will have an opportunity to dig deeper into color theory with monthly lessons and color prompts on the blog. Learn more here.

Members can download the presentation and also a color theory terms reference guide in the Member Area.

Join us in February as we dive into color harmonies and more details of color theory.
