Pattern Fundraiser for Colorado Healing Fund

On March 22, 2021 the Boulder community was shaken by a shooting that took place at a local grocery store. The Boulder MQG will be raising money to support the families of the victims during this difficult time. From today until April 12, 2021 you can purchase a special foundation paper piecing pattern and all proceeds will be donated directly to the Colorado Healing Fund.* The pattern is a PDF to download and print.

Members Julie, Patty, Rebekah, and Eliu pose in front of the charity quilt at the 2020 QuiltCon in Austin.

This pattern was designed by Katie Larson for the guild’s 2020 QuiltCon charity quilt. Katie has generously volunteered the pattern as a way to help following this tragedy.

*There will be 2500 patterns available up to $25,000 in donations. This pattern will only be available until April 12, 2021.

OTHER ANNOUNCEMENTS

The November evening meeting will be held on Thursday, November 1, from 6-8:30pm. Rebecca will discuss how to view and prioritize your UFOs. Throughout this past year we have learned what we can do to get some finished projects to come out of our UFO piles. You can read her blog post series to learn more before the meeting here.

Thank you to everyone who came out to help sew during our Community Outreach sew day on September 30. Our small group of guild members worked on finishing up some of the STEAMfest quilts, sorting donated fabrics and making up quilt kits, and starting new quits to be donated in the future. And thank you to the Albert A. Bartlett Science Communication Center for allowing us to use their beautiful space at the university.

If you’ve made your September Block of the Month then you are ¾ finished with our block of the month challenge. Congratulations! You can find the September tutorial on the blog and also get started on your October block. Find the tutorials here. Only a few more months to go! Here are some of the beautiful participant blocks made for September.

Use the hashtag #bouldermqgbom18 and tag us @bouldermqg when posting your blocks on Instagram!

Open sew is Sunday, October 21 from 9am-4pm. The Round Robin participants will be receiving their quilt tops back from the rounds of the last 4 months. Come to see all the hard work revealed! We will continue working on our Quiltcon 2019 charity quilt. Join us for a fun day of working on this community quilt or bring your own projects. Please RSVP.

  • There are orphan blocks to assemble into quilt tops and/or backing.
  • Members may also bring their own outreach projects to work on during the day.

The Guild has batting and donated fabric which can be used for any of the above projects.  Fabric/UFO donations are gladly accepted.

Bring your sewing machine, your tools & notions.  Don’t forget to bring your lunch, snacks, and drinks since there is no food available in the building.  A refrigerator, microwave, tea kettle and filtered water are available.

Email questions to info@boulderMQG.com

Looking forward to sewing with you at our Community Outreach Sew Day.  Let’s make some quilts!

Directions to The Albert A. Bartlett Science Communication Center:

The building is located on the East Campus of CU Boulder, at 4001 Discovery Drive, near the intersection of Colorado and Foothills Parkway in Boulder.

From Foothills Parkway, turn west onto Colorado Blvd, then take the first right onto Discovery Drive, then right into a driveway (it goes all the way around the building) to parking lot #546 on the north side.  You can park there free for the day.

From the parking lot, follow a diagonal sidewalk to the door into the building.  You can see it marked on the enclosed map, and we’ll have a welcome sign on it.  The door will be unlocked from 9:45AM-10:15AM, so we can get set up easily.  Coming later?  No problem!  Call Shelly on her cell phone, 303 859-9898, and she’ll meet you at the door.

Once you’re inside the Atrium, take the elevator or stairs to the 2nd floor and there we’ll be!

STEAMfest 2018

STEAMfest 2018

March 3-4 the Boulder MQG had a booth at STEAMfest at the Boulder County Fairgrounds in Longmont, CO. STEAMfest is a yearly festival “celebrating all things creative, imaginative, and exploratory.” STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Entrepreneurship, Arts and Making.

This is the third year the Boulder MQG has had a booth at the festival and has introduced children of all ages to sewing. Children choose fabrics for their blocks, sew them together, and then choose either to take them home or leave them behind to be sewn into a quilt we will donate.

Over the two days the children sewed over 200 blocks, 89 of which were donated to our guild. We helped children of all skill levels, some who had never before used a sewing machine and some more experienced with sewing. Some visitors to the booth had been there in past years and were excited to make another block. Often, kids who chose to bring their blocks home use them for fun projects. One girl told me that her older sister has a sewing machine and made her block from last year into a pillow, another younger visitor was telling me how she loves sewing bags and was going to make one from her block.

Thank you to all the volunteers who set up and manned the booth.  Your patience in guiding these children may spark additional interest in some to pursue sewing as a hobby. A special thanks goes to Common Threads who helped with the booth both Saturday and Sunday. A big thank you to Cynthia for lending us two Bernina sewing machines and to all the guild members who donated fabric for the event. And last, but not least, thank you to Monique and Barb for all the planning and work that went into organizing the Boulder MQG booth.

If you are looking for somewhere for your child to learn sewing, Common Threads is located in Boulder and has a Creative Lab with different classes and workshops for kids 7 and up. You can find information about those here.

Community Outreach Quilt Donation – Boulder Police Department Victim Services Unit

Community Outreach Quilt Donation – Boulder Police Department Victim Services Unit

The Boulder MQG Community Outreach committee is responsible for donating the quilts that are created by members to benefit local organizations.

On Friday, February 9,  Community Outreach donated 8 quilts to the Boulder Police Department Victim Services Unit.  The Victim Services Unit is staffed by dedicated and trained employees and 55 volunteers that immediately respond when contacted.  After a horrible or tragic event a person may be in shock and feel numb and confused.  This is where the Victim Services Unit comes into play.

Advocates are dispatched to the scene of a crime, accident, or a victim’s home to assist during the initial trauma. The advocates provide crisis intervention, emotional support, resources, referrals and follow up.  There are times when a quilt is the perfect item to share with the victim, or family of a victim, giving them a sense of comfort and warmth.

The Victim Services Unit was grateful to receive the quilts and appreciative of our donations. Thank you to all of the guild members who worked hard on these quilts to make this donation possible and especially to Barb and Monique for making the donation possible. If you have any questions about the work done by the Community Outreach committee, please click here or contact us with questions.
